I was reminded lately how my life so needs to match my words.
I was spending time with one of my daughters and she reminded me that when it comes down to it, she will remember who I was, over and above what I taught. Then she jokingly brought up the time we were camping in Kelowna and nothing at all was going right; and we were stressed to the max about something going on at the moment, and I threw my keys in anger at the tent trailer. She told me that she would never forget that moment.
This is a moment we can now laugh at. But it made me wonder how I do come across to my kids. How do they experience me...especially as of late amidst all kinds of transition and stress we are experiencing as a family (e.g. adoption and moving).
Likely a good question we can give people permission to answer. How do we come across? How do they experience us? Very telling questions that can tell us a lot about ourselves.
Reminds me of this Jim Hensen quote. “[Kids] don't remember what you try to teach them. They remember what you are.”
